The hype meter is constantly growing with B'z being in the middle of recording and Shane being back in Tokyo after a short break!
News should be out any day now... Everyone's hoping for February 1st (JST), so check back tomorrow in case there's some hype news!

Japanese music magazine "Player" has posted a teaser for the new issue on their blog. It will feature a C'mon tour live report as well as a report on Tak Matsumoto's latest gear. The very same gear he also used during the C'mon tour. To get everyone excited, they posted a picture of the latest guitar prototype Tak is using at the moment: The Gibson Tak Matsumoto DC Prototype 2011 #1. (ver wondered what guitar Tak is holding in the picture on B'z official website? Well now you know.

Perhaps I can get ahold of that issue (out Feb 2nd) and report back to you guys! Would certainly be interesting to read that live report... and of course the Tak Matsumoto gear report

The album was a major hit in Taiwan, generating 129,958 pre-orders in just one week. On that album, there's a track called 三個傻瓜 ("3 Idiots"). <del datetime="2012-01-24T13:54:05+00:00">If anyone can provide a proper translation for the title, I'd be very grateful.</del>

Anyway, close to the end of the song, the singer shouts Tak, come on! and we get to hear Tak's signature sound. His solo proves to be a worthy finish for the song. In the album's booklet he's credited as "Feat. Tak Matsumoto by courtesy of VERMILLION RECORDS".

Check out the song below. Tak's solo starts at around 3:30.

After having released her triple A single "UNCHAINED GIRL" last month, rock singer Anna Tsuchiya has recently announced on her official website that she's going to release a "Best Collaboration Album" on December 21st. The album is going to come in two flavors: CD and CD+DVD.

Among others, Tak Matsumoto has been mentioned to be on the collaboration album as composer.

*UPDATE (January 23rd, 2012)*: The launch of the album was postponed in December, but a new date has now been announced: March 28th, 2012. The title of the song Tak is collaborating on has also been revealed: ALL RIGHT NOW. This is a completely new song by Anna Tsuchiya and will feature Tak. It is currently unclear as to what extend Tak is involved. My guess would be: Composition, Arrangement and Guitar.

Past projects Tak Matsumoto was involved in include(but are not limited to):

Fantasia by Takamiy (Released: August 25, 2010)

Chuo-sen by Kine Naoto (Released: April 7th, 2010)

SET IT ON BLAST!! by Stevie Salas (Released: July 15th, 2009)

They held an event about "the surroundings in which everyone can study hard together to achieve a goal as a band".

When asked to come to the school, Matsumoto gladly accepted the request: "If it's for the kids, I'll do it with pleasure". He also spoke highly of the school's new program called JAM PROGRAM. He thinks it's a great thing to connect the children to one another and making new friends of music.

Tak talked about his experiences of being in a band at the event. He furthermore elaborated on various things from "How B'z succeeded", "How I practiced playing the guitar" to "What's a band?", "What's rock?". Afterwards, they went on to a Question & Answer session where members of LIVEJAM could ask Matsumoto questions and he would try to reply in an easy to understand manner.

One of the children asked "When you were young, what would you do in your free time?" to which Tak replied "I played Super Mario. I was really good at it!".

Another question was "Recalling past live performances, what moment will forever be in your memory?" to which Tak replied "Probably when Inaba suddenly disappeared from the stage. I could still hear him singing, but I couldn't see him. When I wondered where he was, he actually fell off the stage. But even though he fell off the stage, he was still singing!"

Everybody was very delighted to have Matsumoto-san as a guest. They were listening very closely to everything he had to say and enjoyed the time with him. To finish off the event, they took a group picture:

Hey folks, it has been quiet on the B'z front these days, but I'm still alive and kickin'. Today, I bring you this piece of news: Tak Matsumoto is releasing another Epiphone Double Cutaway(DC) model in Japan. It's available in Japan starting today at a price of 122,850 Yen. It comes with a hard case and a limited edition gigbag.

Judging from the picture above, it looks like Tak has already used that guitar while touring North America this year.

Epiphone has also posted quite a stunning article about Tak's new gem:

Epiphone announces the new Tak Matsumoto DC Standard Plus Top Cherry Outfit, a stunningly beautiful guitar designed by Epiphone and Tak Matsumoto exclusively for Japan. From his blistering solo work and his long-standing association with the band B'z to his GRAMMY winning albums with renowned artists like Larry Carlton, Tak Matsumoto has proved himself not only one of Japan's true masters of the fingerboard, but one of the world's most powerful rockers. With a searing tone that is utterly infectious, Matsumoto has bridged the musical gap between East and West and proved that rock is truly a universal language. Now, Epiphone brings Tak's unique design and superior tone home with the one-of-a-kind Limited Edition Tak Matsumoto DC Standard Plus Top Cherry Outfit which embodies Tak's own asymmetrical take on the popular DC Standard Les Paul style with a carved Hard Maple cap with AAA Flame Maple Veneer and a stunning Black Cherry finish.

Larry Carlton, who won a Grammy Award together with Tak Matsumoto in February this year, has received the George Benson Lifetime Achievement Award at The Canadian Smoothies 2011 on April 29th. A video has been put on vimeo in which various musicians congratulate Mr. Carlton for this outstanding award. Among them is Tak Matsumoto. For the impatient: watch from 3:43!

"Hi, Larry-san! Congratulations to you. You are an amazing guitar player and so inspiring to me. I learned so much by working with you on the Take Your Pick album. So winning a Grammy with you is one of my greatest achievements in my life. I'll treasure it forever. I owe you one."

*It took me quite a while to figure out what the bold part was... it sounds like "around"...

[...]
After many years I've begun having this urge to paint portraits again, and when I was thinking about doing a portrait series once more I got a commission offer to do a portrait of Tak Matsumoto, the guitar player of the Japan's renowned rock duo, B'z, by a good friend of mine who wanted to give it to Tak as a gift. Tak had just won the Grammy award this year. "How timely," I thought. I was thrilled to do his portrait, yet the last time I met Tak in person was over 10 years ago. Normally I don't like to use photographs to paint portraits. So I really had to depend on my imagination!

I was so excited that I was not able to write up a proper article and ended up posting the videos instead. However, this is a huge success for Tak Matsumoto and I think it deserves a good, and thorough article. Also, it is a great opportunity to look back how it all started, and how Tak Matsumoto finally came to receive this outstanding award.

It is a rather lengthy article, so be sure to bring some time with you! Click read more to see the article!

How it all started

In 2007, Larry Carlton was introduced to Tak Matsumoto by Gibson itself. This is no surprise, since both of them have their respective Gibson Signature models. Matsumoto had heard of Larry Carlton and his music before, he listened to one of his albums for the first time when he was 17 years old. In 2008, they decided they would work on a project together. However, as 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of B'z, Matsumoto was dedicated to touring throughout Japan.

In fact, B'z did their "B'z LIVE-GYM 2008 ACTION" tour from January 2008 throughout August to promote their studio album "ACTION" released in 2007. Shortly after that, B'z was celebrating their 20th anniversary by kicking off another, but rather short tour called "B'z LIVE-GYM Pleasure 2008 -GLORY DAYS-" which was held in September as September 21st marks the day B'z debuted in 1988.

It wasn't until late 2009, that Larry Carlton and Tak Matsumoto would finally be able to work on their project.

The Recording

When Carlton and Matsumoto first met in the studio, Matsumoto had already prepared about three songs, so they could get started right away. Due to all the enthusiasm Matsumoto already brought into the project, the recording would be a major success later on. However, the only time they were working on the project together, was in the studio.

They wrote their songs separately and talked about them together in the studio. That also explains why the album is composed of six tracks by Carlton and Matsumoto respectively. Their collaboration took their own music experience to a whole new level. Matsumoto said in the Gibson interview "It’s totally different from others I had created. This is Larry and Tak music!".
After having written a few songs, they were able to kick off the pre-production in Tokyo. In only three days time, they were able to work up four songs. "That was an amazing time!" Matsumoto said.

After countless hours spent in the studio, Carlton and Matsumoto were finally able to release their album Take Your Pick on June 2nd, 2010 in Japan and on June 15th, 2010 in the US and Europe.

Reviews of his CD with Larry Carlton

Following the release of the album, various critics surfaced on the internet, praising Carlton's and Matsumoto's works. Matsumoto was previously pretty much unknown to music connoiseurs from the West, but they were astonished by the sound Matsumoto put into his songs.
Although Matsumoto released his instrumental album "Hana" in 2002 internationally as well as "TMG I" in 2004, he somehow didn't become popular in the US or in Europe despite the remarkable reviews his works have received internationally.

Matsumoto was able to impress listeners in the West by contributing fresh sound to his songs on Take Your Pick. Due to the popularity of Larry Carlton and his works, it is sure that a lot of Carlton fans will discover Matsumoto's music, thus increasing the popularity of Matsumoto.

Live Performances

To promote the album in Japan, Carlton and Matsumoto decided to tour Japan for a few gigs. The 12,000 tickets for the 18 performances sold out in Japan in less than an hour.
They performed in Blue Note Tokyo, Motion Blue Yokohama, Zepp Fukuoka, Zepp Osaka and Blue Note Nagoya. Additional performances took also place in Zepp Sapporo and Zepp Sendai.

But that is not all, Carlton and Matsumoto then went on to perform at the Tokyo Jazz Festival in September 2010. It was actually Matsumoto's first time and he was really honored to be able to perform on stage.
To top it off, Carlton and Matsumoto announced that they will perform in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The fans were very delighted to be able to see Tak Matsumoto in Taiwan as well as Hong Kong. They want B'z to come there once more and perform on stage. Matsumoto noticed this when he went to Taiwan and Hong Kong. He also received a lot of letters from fans, written in Japanese, asking him to come again, but as B'z.

As tickets were limited, fans in Japan were happy when the two announced the release of their live performance in Blue Note Tokyo on DVD. The DVD was released in Japan on October 27th.

Awards

Although sales weren't as good as hoped, Take Your Pick received the Golden Disc Award for "Jazz Album of the Year" in Japan. Furthermore, Tak Matsumoto was voted "Best Guitarist" by readers of the Japanese magazine PLAYER. Also, the collaboration between Tak Matsumoto and Larry Carlton was voted #4 in the category "This year's biggest news".

But the real biggest news of the year 2010, though, was that Take Your Pick was nominated for the Grammy in the category "Best Pop Instrumental Album".

The Grammy

Before the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards could take place, word got out that Matsumoto would be attending the Grammys with his wife. His wife especially wore a kimono made for just that occasion. Then, February 13th came about and I wonder if Matsumoto knew that this day would become one he would never forget for the rest of his life. It was a big day for him.

As the Grammys were broadcasted live on Youtube, everyone in the world could tune in and see the show. This is especially interesting as this part was not shown on television. The first encounter with Tak Matsumoto was on the red carpet. When asked if he is overwhelmed or anxious, he replied "I'm a little nervous". Luckily Larry Carlton took over and made sure Matsumoto could feel at ease.

Then the pre-telecast show began and it ran longer than expected. They had over 90 awards to give away. Unfortunately the category "Best Pop Instrumental" album came up as one of the last, just before the end of the pre-telecast show. That's why there are so many empty seats in the video. Matsumoto and Carlton were so nervous the whole time since it took over 2 hours until they could finally feel relieved, and then finally excited to know that they have made it. They won the Grammy for "Best Pop Instrumental Album"!

Once they had made their way to the stage, Larry Carlton took over and thanked everybody for the Grammy Award. He then went on to talk about Matsumoto and described him as the "the top guitar producer in Japan" . He spoke very highly of Matsumoto's experience in recording and production and that he has learned a lot from Matsumoto. This served as a great introduction to Matsumoto's part, who introduced himself to the audience by saying "Hi, I'm Tak Matsumoto, guitar player from Japan. Nice to meet you". Unfortunately due to the tight schedule of the pre-telecast show, they didn't have enough time to prepare a proper speech.

Despite the tight schedule, Matsumoto was so nervous that he couldn't say anything other than "I'm very proud to be here as a Japanese guitar player. Thank you so much!!". It seemed he was so overwhelmed that he couldn't find the right words to express his feelings properly.

Reactions

Of course, the news were all reporting about Matsumoto's Grammy Award monday morning in Japan. iTunes sales exploded in Japan resulting in Take Your Pick hitting #1 in the charts. But that's not all: According to Tsutaya, all copies of Take Your Pick have either been rented or sold by Tuesday morning. Take Your Pick even managed to get up to #4 on Amazon Japan's bestseller list.

There are various tweets congratulating Tak Matsumoto for his achievement. To name a few:

Masuda Takanobu (regular B'z support member): "[...] Congratulations for the Grammy, TAK! Wonderful!" (link)

Akihito Tokunaga ("doa" member, former B'z support member): "Tak-san won the Grammy! Looks like good music is rewarded after all. Congratulations!!" (link)

Josh Gooch (~en II~ tour support member): "Congratulations to Larry Carlton & Tak Matsumoto for winning "Best Pop Instrumental Album"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (link)

The most notable thing, however, is the fact that when Matsumoto was nominated for the Grammy, Koshi Inaba said to him in the studio "You are my hero". Later on, Matsumoto reveals in an interview that "I had never told anyone until now, but the Grammys was one of my dreams and a big goal."

This goes without saying, but the Grammy for "Best Pop Instrumental Album" is the biggest achievement in Matsumoto's career. As busy as he is, he's already back in the studio, making more B'z music!

Congratulations to Carlton and Matsumoto once again! Please keep up the good music!

I mean it has been out in Japan since October 27th, 2010, but oh well...
On Larry Carlton's official website, they announced that because of winning the Grammy and all the excitement, they decided to set the release date of the DVD to tomorrow(February 18th)!
What's funny, however, is that they say "See the GRAMMY WINNING album "Take Your Pick" performed live in Tokyo with a 12-camera high definition shoot!". What is this all about?
I bought the DVD and it's only in standard definition. Why did they not release a Blu-ray version although they shot it in high definition? A budget problem?

Well... I guess they want to jump on the bandwagon and expect great sales since Take Your Pick jumped to #1 in the iTunes charts in Japan after word got out that Carlton and Matsumoto had won the Grammy.
But that's not all:
"According to the Shibuya store of Japan’s largest music and video rental chain store operation Tsutaya, all copies of Mr. Matsumoto’s newest album were sold or rented out by Tuesday morning. “Take Your Pick” also soared to fourth place on Amazon Japan’s best selling CD ranking, just behind – inevitably –all-conquering girl group AKB48’s latest album."
(Taken from: http://blogs.wsj.com/japanrealtime/2011/02/15/after-gdp-blow-japan-still-rocksat-grammys/)

Anyway... if you haven't bought the DVD yet... here's your chance! And it's cheaper, too. It's only $25.99 opposed to 5250 Yen (roughly $50) in Japan.
You can order it via Larry Carlton's web store: http://www.larrycarlton.com/store.html

I'm not sure everyone has noticed, but when Carlton and Matsumoto make their way to the stage, there's a person behind them holding a camera in his hand. He is probably recording the whole thing. Just take a look at this picture here:

Now... the video filmed by this guy has surfaced on YouTube. It's now even on Larry Carlton's official channel, so I guess it is not a problem to post it here. What you can see is, well, Tak Matsumoto's wife in the kimono Kahori Yamagata designed (see my other post). Just see for yourself:
